Veterans Group Tells President Obama: Don’t Escalate in Afghanistan
Posted by Derrick Crowe on November 12th, 2009

Veterans for Rethinking Afghanistan is gathering signatures for a simple message they plan to deliver to the White House: Don’t escalate.

Here’s the text of the petition, which you can sign at the Rethink Afghanistan website:

Dear President Obama,

News reports indicate that you plan to send between 34,000 and 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

We urge you to reconsider this decision.

Expanding the war in Afghanistan will make Americans less safe, not more so.

Less than 100 members of Al Qaeda remain in Afghanistan. The Karzai government we once supported is controlled by warlords and is riddled with corruption. Pakistan’s stability will be gravely imperiled by an expansion of the war. Hundreds if not thousands of troops will be killed, along with countless civilians. Anti-American sentiment throughout the Muslim world will be inflamed by civilian bloodshed, facilitating recruitment by terrorist organizations.

The war will cost billions of dollars when we can least afford it, and will stymie your domestic agenda.

The cost of sustaining a military force in Afghanistan is $1 million per soldier per year – that’s close to $100 billion dollars annually with the troop increase. With the economy in shambles, the deficits generated by these enormous costs will compromise your domestic legislative agenda both fiscally and politically.

The United States has no vital interest in Afghanistan. If you choose to further escalate troop levels in Afghanistan, you will be making the biggest mistake of your presidency.

Please reject General McChrystal’s troop requests and begin the process of exiting U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

I’ve signed it. Have you?

    President Obama,
I changed parties, I worked for your campaign, I donated to you, the DNC, Vote Vets, Move-on, to name a few – all for you, because I thought you would change Washington. Changing Washington means leaving behind the gutless, shameless fear-mongering, neocon war machine that has been running Washington DC for years. Get out of Afghanistan now! There is no reason to be there!

Obama is a bought poser. He lied during the campaign and now he continues the military industrial complex and Texas Oil profiteering venture. We are watching thieves steal oil, money, and lives for the benefit of their luxurious lifestyles. When Obama admits his B/S tomorrow he will be signing away his second term. We have billions to borrow for wars, but we can never find money to rebuild and invest in the America's future by adopting a health care plan that cuts out the money collectors. This country will implode within the next three years because of this continued corruption and greed.

  3. brettjamesonIII says:

You couldn't have made it any more clear. The Texas Oil scum and the military industrial complex see life through death. How many trillions have they stolen over the last few years, and we're fed this lie that all this B/S war in Iraq was because of false intel, but yet no one is held accountable for the civilians or military personnel that have died because of it….hmmmmmmm.

The financial scam the same way….where were the SEC and Wall Street monitors….hmmmmmm, yet no one is told where all the money went, nor is anyone held accountable for all these scams.

Follow the axis of evil, it goes through Texas and Saudi Arabia.

I am sick and tired of the liars we get scammed from who steal our votes and steal our elections. The reason they keep the war going is because it assures the US remains indebted so we never have to think about paying restitution to the countries we committed War Crimes against. It is time Americans target the liars….kick them out…and begin the work the heals and provides assurances that the Military Complex is shut down, and defanged… it is time where a President no longer has the power to send economic deprived civilians who join the Military to get a meal and cot, and who are uneducated upon the time of their enlistment. It is time to shut down Enlistment Offices, and begin thinking about the message Americans can succeed without War, without hiding behind guns….and do good things toward the face of fear…. This war has been a lie from the very beginning.. It was Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld and their secret CIA apparatus that engineered 911 and killed fellow Americans to cover-up their prior crimes and indictments of ecidence being stored in those building that day. They lied that BinLadin did 911, and were the very chumps who armed Saddam in the first place…. Let us stop the charade…..indict not only the Bush criminals…but also thier henchmen from Obama, Robert Gates, Petraus, and McCrystal, and John McCain as well… John McCain is still the center piece sleeping conspirator doing his best to make sure he is never brought to trial for his war crimes in Vietnam…..Even his lying attempt to think he is a real Senator. He is the enemy….and these people need to be stopped….if we are ever to find real justice and a real Homeland in America

As a soldier who served as a part of the Theatre Tactical Force 82nd ABN we got to see almost the entire country of Afghanistan and the many different tribal regions including the Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, and Nangahar Provinces. By doing so I can personally share with you that our forces do make a difference and that certain areas are only controlled by Taliban forces due to the lack of soldiers and the inability to hold those areas, especially in the Helmand Province where they are needed most. The poplulation everywhere I have been, including the Helmand, and after major battles was more than thrilled to have us there while they build up their security and defenses allowing them to fend off the Taliban fighters. Are their civilian casualties? Of course there are, and that is one of the worst aspects of war. However, our country knows that as well as any. Any soldier who has ever come across and met personally one of these fighters needs no answer as to why we are there 1) Our enemy is one that will stop at no cost to kill Americans and 2) To help the good people of Afghanistan build some much needed structure and security that has lacked it for many years. Its a mission well worth it and if the weak hearted don't accept it, the answer its simple. Don't join the services and wrap yourself in a peace flag while others go out and make a difference by killing people who would give anything to cut your heads off and help Afghanistan become a self sufficent country.

Peacemakers take action to lead the charge to end the war. Join forces with the over 100,000 people who make a difference.
