Gallup is saying that Obama’s disasterous first debate has erased his lead in their national poll, with an historic 5% bounce to Romney. The Obama camp clearly knows there’s been a game-changer and it’s all their fault. The NYT reports the conference calls to revise strategy began ten minutes before the first debate even ended. Obama’s even making weak jokes about his performance on the stump.
What’s done is done and obviously the Obama campaign will be looking to make up some of that lost ground in the VP debate and the two final presidential ones. Biden debates Ryan this Thursday and while Republicans will be hoping to see a gaffe-ridden performance from Joe, Democrats will be looking for the Biden who showed up to the DNC. Ryan is something of an unknown quantity, we all know he can be slick and sound wonkish, but he’s never faced this level of national attention in this kind of format before. If Biden can’t rattle him, it’s liable to be judged a dead heat or close win for the Republican. My money’s on Joe edging the polling win, but then again I thought Obama would romp the first debate.
