A Statement from Former Marine Corporals Rick Reyes and Jake Diliberto, Cofounders of Veterans for Rethinking Afghanistan:
On Christmas Day, the Taliban captors of Private First Class Bowe Bergdahl released a new video featuring the captured American soldier speaking on camera about the war in Afghanistan. Alongside the footage of Bergdahl, the video includes a segment of a different video produced by Veterans for Rethinking Afghanistan (VRA). That segment features VRA members expressing opposition to U.S. military engagement in Afghanistan. We strenuously object to the inclusion of our work in this propaganda effort by the Taliban. The use of kidnapping and forced testimony by POWs is a moral outrage and an affront to international law. The likely use of coercion to extract PFC Bergdahl’s testimony as well as the act of publishing this kind of video of a captive are egregious violations of internationally accepted standards for the treatment of prisoners and a violation of Geneva Convention Article 17. We feel strongly that the Taliban needs to abide by international human rights standards, and begin arbitration with the international community. As combat veterans and as Americans, we condemn the kidnapping of American soldiers as a war tactic by the Taliban, and we call for the immediate and unconditional release of PFC Bergdahl.
